The Cha Cha Cha genre is derived from
the combination of the suave French quadrille and the
rhythmically powerful Cuban son. Just as the cha cha cha
music style developed out of the marriage of several cultural
backgrounds, Grupo Cha Cha brings a wealth of musical diversity to the
audience through their unique performances. Grupo Cha Cha is led by
flute/sax player Lise Gilly, and the line-up includes keyboard, bass,
Latin percussion, drums, and vocals.
The group’s repertoire consists of
vocal and instrumental versions of Afro Cuban Son, Cha Cha Cha and
Mambo; Brazilian Samba and Bossa Nova; and Latin Jazz tunes intertwined
with a touch of American Rhythm and Blues. Grupo Cha Cha also performs
original songs and arrangements by well-known jazz pianist (and band
member!), Steve Million.
Grupo Cha Cha is a six-piece band but
they can provide trios and quartets as well. Depending on the event,
they can cater to one musical style over another, or play a variety of
styles. They also can play either background music or music to get you
on your feet!
Grupo Cha Cha has played public and private events
in many well known venues around Chicago. They have also been featured
on: “The Place for Jazz” 90.9 WDCB, Miles Ahead Jazz with Neil Tesser
1240 AM, live broadcasts on 88.3 WZRD in Chicago; and “The Latin Style
of Jazz” on CRN Digital Networks. Their new CD, Direcciones, is
